As the rising star in the marketing department, it is quite normal that sooner or later you will become the decision maker. And although most people in the company will see it coming months ahead, your immediate boss will probably be oblivious to it. So breaking the news to him or her will involve a level of diplomacy and tact.

So how to handle it?

Security. Having them escorted from the building may be effective but isn’t good for the overall morale of the staff.
Brutal honesty. Concise but often can reduce people to tears and you don’t want a snotty ex-boss on the shoulder of your expensive suit.
The sideways promotion. A classic ruse. Announce their promotion to new business director for Outer Siberia. Effective immediately.
The Batman and Robin tactic. Explain you’re a team now and that being a sidekick is better than being fired.
The fire-o-gram. With a funny song and a dance, who wouldn’t chuckle when being fired by a performer?

However you choose to do it always remember they may be redundant now but they do deserve a little respect for hiring the person that is bringing them down today: you.
